Tucked away high up in the Amathole Mountains of the Eastern Cape, lies the small village of Hogsback. With its high altitude (some 1300 m above sea-level) this small village enjoys snow in winter and cooler temperatures even in summer. It is from this same attribute that the village has its humble beginnings. Missionaries of the Tyume valley and of the nearby town of Alice found the forested mountain top to be a welcoming break from the sweltering heat below. Located in the northern most parts of the Western Cape is the small village of Nuwerus (“new rest”) which in the days of the first settlers was also known as Ertvarkgat. Sometimes retold as “Vlakvarkgat” — “warthog waterhole”. The village had its humble beginnings as a halfway house between Vanrhynsdorp and Garies, specifically for the horses that carried supplies and mail between these two outposts. Today the village is not much larger with a population of less than 600 and only has a sparse offering of goods and services for the traveler.
